How this EV vs petrol calculator works

For the petrol car we multiply your yearly distance by its fuel use and the petrol price. For the EV we multiply distance by its energy use, add about 10% for charging losses, then blend your home and public charging prices by how much of your charging happens at home.

What we assume

Getting the cheapest charging

Charging at home on an off-peak or EV tariff, or from your own rooftop solar during the day, is usually the cheapest option by far. Public fast charging can cost several times more per kWh, so the share of charging you do at home matters a lot.
