Sense Energy Monitor: AI That Knows What Is Running
The Sense Energy Monitor takes a fundamentally different approach to home energy monitoring. While competitors like the Emporia Vue use physical sensors on each individual circuit to track consumption, Sense uses a single pair of sensors on your main electrical panel combined with machine learning AI to identify individual appliances from their electrical signatures — no per-circuit wiring required.
How Sense Works
Every electrical device has a unique power signature — a distinctive pattern of how it draws power when it switches on, runs, and switches off. A refrigerator compressor has a different signature to a dishwasher, which differs from a washing machine, which differs from a hair dryer. Sense analyses one million data points per second from your main panel and uses AI trained on millions of homes to recognise these signatures and attribute power usage to specific appliances.
The result: rather than seeing "I used 8kWh today", you see "Refrigerator: 1.2kWh, Washing Machine: 0.8kWh, HVAC: 3.1kWh, Always-On devices: 2.9kWh". This granularity changes how you think about energy use and helps with conducting an effective home energy audit.
Installation
Installation is simpler than circuit-level monitors like the Emporia Vue. Two current transformer clamps attach to your main supply cables in the electrical panel — no clamps needed on individual circuits. A licensed electrician can complete installation in under 30 minutes. The Sense unit connects to your home WiFi and immediately starts collecting data.
The learning process takes 2-6 weeks as the AI analyses your specific appliances. During this time you will see "Other" as a large catch-all category that gradually shrinks as individual appliances are identified and labelled.
Detection Accuracy: The Real Test
We monitored a four-bedroom home over eight weeks. Sense successfully identified: refrigerator, second refrigerator (garage), washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, microwave, oven, HVAC system, hot water system, pool pump, and 3 of 4 televisions. It never identified: the range hood, a coffee machine, and one specific LED lamp circuit.
Detection accuracy was approximately 78% of total consumption correctly attributed to named appliances after 8 weeks — better than most users report initially but consistent with Sense's own published benchmarks. The community-powered appliance library (where Sense users share their device signatures) improves accuracy over time as more homes contribute data.
Always-On and Peak Power
Two features we found particularly valuable. Always-On shows you the baseline power your home draws 24/7 even when you think everything is off — in our test home this was 340W, costing $890/year. Identifying and eliminating phantom loads (old entertainment system, garage beer fridge, pool equipment on timers) cut this to 180W saving $420/year.
Peak Power alerts notify you when consumption spikes above a threshold — useful for identifying when high-draw appliances run unexpectedly and for managing demand charges where applicable.
Solar Integration
Sense supports solar monitoring with an additional pair of CT clamps on your solar inverter output. The app then shows a real-time energy flow diagram: solar generation, home consumption, grid import and export. For solar households this provides much of the same insight as dedicated solar monitoring apps like Solar Analytics, integrated with whole-home consumption data.
Sense vs Emporia Vue 3
The Emporia Vue 3 ($200 installed) uses 16 individual circuit sensors for exact circuit-level monitoring — more accurate and faster to achieve meaningful data. The Sense ($299 + installation) uses AI to identify appliances without per-circuit wiring — more sophisticated technology but with a learning period and some appliances never identified. For most homeowners wanting to understand their energy use, the Emporia Vue 3 is more reliable. For tech-curious users who want appliance-level AI identification and do not want extensive wiring, Sense is uniquely compelling.

The Sense Energy Monitor is impressive technology that works better than sceptics expect. The AI appliance detection is genuinely useful once trained, the always-on and peak monitoring are immediately valuable, and the solar integration is well-executed. It loses marks for the learning period, some appliances that resist detection, and a price premium over the Emporia Vue. For energy-curious homeowners who want appliance-level insight without rewiring their panel, Sense is the right tool.
