Why Used EVs Are a Smart Buy in 2026
The used EV market has matured significantly. Early adoption models from 2019–2022 are now entering the used market in volume, prices have dropped substantially, and battery longevity data from hundreds of thousands of real-world vehicles shows degradation is far less severe than early fears suggested. A well-chosen used EV in 2026 offers exceptional value.
Battery Health: The Critical Check
Unlike a petrol engine where you check for oil leaks and listen for unusual sounds, the most important thing to verify on a used EV is battery health. This tells you the effective capacity remaining compared to when the vehicle was new.
How to check battery health:
- State of Health (SOH) reading — Many EVs display SOH directly in the settings menu or companion app. Tesla shows battery capacity in the app; Nissan Leaf shows battery bar indicators; others vary.

As a rule of thumb: expect 2–3% degradation in year one, then less than 1–2% per year thereafter. A 2020 vehicle with 80,000km should show 85–92% SOH. Anything below 80% warrants significant discount or avoidance.
What Mileage Is Too High?
EV battery longevity is much better correlated with charge cycles and thermal stress than raw mileage. A 150,000km highway-driven Tesla that was charged to 80% daily is likely in better battery condition than a 60,000km city car that was fast-charged frequently and regularly charged to 100%.
That said, as a rough guide:
- Under 80,000km — Low risk, minimal degradation expected
- 80,000–150,000km — Check SOH carefully; likely fine with good charging history
- 150,000–200,000km — Meaningful degradation possible; factor into price

Always check remaining warranty coverage before buying. Most manufacturers warranty the battery separately from the vehicle:

Main caveat: no active thermal management means faster degradation in hot climates and with frequent fast charging. Avoid the 62kWh e+ version which had more degradation issues.
Best All-Rounder: Tesla Model 3 (2019–2021)
The strongest used EV buy in most markets. Supercharger network access, outstanding software, over-the-air updates, and battery longevity data is excellent. 64kWh battery, ~450km real-world range, excellent reliability record. Available from $30,000–$40,000. Hyundai's battery thermal management is solid and real-world degradation data is reassuring. Active recall issues were resolved under warranty for most vehicles.
Red Flags to Watch For
- No service history or charging history available
- SOH below 80% without significant price discount
- Evidence of frequent DC fast charging (check charging history in vehicle data)
- Battery warning lights in history
- Seller unwilling to allow pre-purchase inspection
- Unusually low asking price (too good to be true usually is)
